Breast Care Center at Englewood Hospital is First and Only in New Jersey to Receive Prestigious Accreditation

The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center is now the first and only accredited breast center in New Jersey recognized by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).  It is among the first 50 breast centers nationwide to receive the distinction from the NAPBC, which represents a consortium of national, professional organizations dedicated to improving the quality of care and monitoring outcomes of patients with breast cancer and other breast diseases.

“We are very proud of this prestigious recognition by the NAPBC,” said Dawn Hegadorn, Administrative Director for Englewood Hospital’s Breast Care Center.  “This accreditation is validation of the expertise and dedication of our multidisciplinary team and our commitment to the highest standards for quality care possible for our breast cancer patients.”

Accreditation by the NAPBC, administered by the American College of Surgeons, a professional organization dedicated to improving the care of surgical patients, is granted only to those centers that are voluntarily committed to providing the best possible care to patients with diseases of the breast. Each breast center must undergo a rigorous evaluation and review of its performance and compliance with NAPBC Standards.

To maintain accreditation, centers must monitor compliance with NAPBC standards to ensure quality care and undergo an on-site review every three years.  Centers that have received NAPBC accreditation are among the leading organizations in their field and have demonstrated a commitment to quality care. They also understand the importance of providing a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of breast disease, giving patients comprehensive care in a single setting.

Because they are choosing an NAPBC-accredited breast center (www.accreditedbreastcenters.org), patients at Englewood Hospital can expect comprehensive care including a complete range of state-of-the-art services and equipment; a multidisciplinary, team approach to coordinate the best-available treatment options; information about ongoing cancer clinical trials and new treatment options; access to prevention and early detection programs, cancer education, and support services; and ongoing monitoring and adoption of advancements in cancer care.

“The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center continues to be a national model for breast care,” said Miguel Sanchez, MD, Medical Director, the Breast Care Center at Englewood Hospital. “Our experienced physicians, surgeons, oncologists, radiologists and pathologists review each case as a team in order to tailor personalized cancer treatment and management strategies.  Through educational, preventive, treatment and post-treatment programs, we have helped to improve the health of many patients in our community and region.”

About Englewood Hospital’s Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center

The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center at Englewood Hospital is an international training site where physicians from around the world visit to learn the “Englewood Model” approach to patient care. In 1994, the Center was designated by Congress as a national model for breast cancer diagnosis and management with its specially trained team of experienced radiologists and pathologists working together to perform diagnostic tests. In 2000, the Center was acknowledged by the American College of Pathology for detecting tumors at least one-half the size of those detected at 95% of all other institutions in the country.

Most recently, the Center was designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR), and it received full accreditation for Breast MRI Imaging by The Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Magnetic Resonance Laboratories (ICAMRL). Both ACR Center of Excellence Designation and ICAMRL Accreditation were awarded following voluntary evaluations by experts in the field of breast imaging and indicate a standard of excellence beyond required accreditation.
Additionally, The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center is an international training site for Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA), pathology and advanced radiological testing. A highly-specialized staff integrates state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures and evaluations in one comprehensive setting, and works continuously with prestigious organizations such as the National Cancer Institute to set the standards of breast care diagnosis and treatment.

Englewood Hospital utilizes the latest technology in every arena, and is the only hospital in New Jersey to offer the recently acquired Aurora® 1.5T Dedicated Breast MRI System, which allows unprecedented 3D imaging for high-risk patients. The Breast Center’s all-digital mammography unit is the most advanced screening and diagnostic tool available, and we employ the R2 ImageChecker® to add an “extra set of eyes” to digital mammogram screenings.

The Breast Center was renamed The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center in 2007 in memory of Leslie Simon, an exceptionally courageous spirit who lost her seven-year battle with breast cancer in 2006. Leslie’s name was added at the request of The Kennedy Funding Invitational, a professional tennis tournament whose charitable cause is the fight against breast cancer.
