Stepping High in the Fight Against Breast Cancer

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month will start with a bang in Bergen County, NJ, when Steps for Survival, an always delightful gathering for cancer patients, their families and their healthcare team, takes place at the beautiful Alpine Country Club in Demarest, NJ on October 1, 2009 from 6-9PM.

For four years, Steps for Survival has made the journey for individuals with breast cancer just a bit easier. The efforts of the volunteers who make it happen have meant a relaxing, fun-filled event that also raises money for The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center.

“Steps for Survival underscores the importance of community involvement in the fight again breast cancer and the positive channeling of the strong feelings that women may get after the diagnosis of breast cancer,” said Dr. Miguel Sanchez, medical director of the center.

Steps for Survival will feature music, entertainment and an open bar. The event is sponsored by the offices of plastic surgeon Dr. Richard D’Amico and oncologists Drs. Forte, Schleider, Attas, Condemi, Morrison & Kim. Staff members Audrey Fey and Diane Trezza came up with the idea for the joint effort in 2006. “We thought it would be wonderful to do something together for breast cancer patients, especially since the two practices have so many in common,” said Diane Trezza. Patients and many other community members lend a hand or support the event to make it a success.

A highlight will be a Fashion Showcase of bathing suits by Phoenix 365 for women who have had mastectomies. “We wanted to do something especially becoming and feminine,” said Audrey Fey, a licensed skin care specialist who by profession is an expert in making women feel and look more beautiful. She recently co-founded Phoenix 365 with business partner Sheren Castagna. Mastectomy patients will model the bathing suits. Hair and make-up will be by Karen Santoro of GrassHopper Hair Designers.

Show hosts include Diane Trezza, Audrey Fey, Cheryl Hodges, Beth Nadel, Anne VanDyke, Sabine Boehle, Tamara Markowitz and Merrie Parker-Weber. WABC EyeWitness News Anchor Lori Stokes will preside over the check presentation to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, where she is a board member.

Tickets are $75. Steps for Survival will be held at the Alpine Country Club, 80 Anderson Avenue, Demarest, NJ. Call Audrey (201-567-9595) or Diane (201-568-5250), or visit stepsforsurvival.com for more information.
