Prestigious Honors for Englewood Hospital’s Pathology Department
Dr. Miguel Sanchez, Dr. Mikhail Tismenetsky and Technologist Al Valentino earn national recognition from College of American Pathologists

June 28, 2010 (Englewood, NJ) – Englewood Hospital and Medical Center (englewoodhospital.com) is proud to announce that Miguel Sanchez, MD, Chief of Pathology and Director of Laboratories, and Mikhail Tismenetsky, MD, Pathologist, are among four physicians nationwide to receive the Excellence in Education Award from the College of American Pathologists (CAP). The CAP Education Award recognizes outstanding contributions in the development of Continuing Medical Education and Continuing Education activities in support of CAP education.

Dr. Sanchez and Dr. Tismenetsky are honored for their role in developing a new certification program for Ultrasound-Guided Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA).  The new program, now in use throughout the country, is the first of its kind. In addition to helping develop the new program, they were among only four physicians nationwide chosen to serve on the faculty.

“This certification program is designed to educate and train pathologists on ultrasound-guided FNA and the issues surrounding it,” noted Dr. Sanchez. “In some cases, the pathologists enroll in the program to become more familiar with the intricacies of ultrasound-guided FNA. In other instances, they become certified so they will be able to obtain an FNA sample if a radiologist or qualified technician is not available.”

CAP is also recognizing Alfred Valentino, an Englewood Hospital ultrasound technologist, with a special commendation for his contributions to the program. Mr. Valentino helped develop content for ultrasound-related training modules and delivered workshop lectures, demonstrated equipment, and answered participants’ equipment and image-related questions during the training sessions.

“Our medical and professional staff is committed to not only providing the highest quality care but also improving techniques to enhance the patient experience,” said Douglas A. Duchak, president and CEO of Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. “We are extremely proud of this most recent achievement attained by our Pathology Department.”
Dr. Sanchez, medical director of The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, is an internationally acclaimed leader and pioneer in the early diagnosis of breast cancer. Under his leadership, the Medical Center has earned a reputation for outstanding breast care and leading cytopathology services.
The award will be presented to Dr. Sanchez and Dr. Tismenetsky at a Special Scientific Presentation during CAP ’10 – The Pathologists’ Meeting™, Sept. 26, in Chicago.
