Borough of Leonia Awards EMS Contract to Englewood Hospital

Englewood, NJ) November 1, 2010 – Englewood Hospital and Medical Center and the Borough of Leonia recently announced a new partnership that will provide dedicated Englewood Hospital emergency medical services (EMS) to borough residents.  The one-year ambulance contract, which started October 1, was unanimously approved by the mayor and council following a three month review of Request for Proposals from the Medical Center and four other competing medical service providers.

As part of the new agreement, Englewood Hospital will provide routine medical transport, critical care and 9-1-1 aid.  A dedicated Englewood Hospital ambulance will be available in Leonia from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. during weekdays and holidays.  Ambulance services on weeknights and weekends will be served by the Leonia Ambulance Corps. Englewood Hospital EMS also will continue to provide Leonia residents with the highest level of service through the latest emergency medical care, public education and health awareness.

“The Borough of Leonia experienced difficulty in staffing the ambulance during the daytime hours because the many dedicated volunteers that were once available during the daytime are no longer able to respond,” said Jack Terhune, Leonia Borough Administrator. “In the first month of the contractual agreement with Englewood Hospital, the Borough is extremely pleased with the professional response of the EMT Staff.”

According to Leonia Police Chief Jay Ziegler, the ambulance service partnership has been extremely effective. “It has enhanced public safety in general,” he stated. “Our residents benefit greatly from the availability and immediate response of professional EMS.”

Currently, Englewood Hospital provides dedicated ambulance services to Palisades Park.  A three-year contract that includes around-the-clock ambulance assistance to borough residents was awarded to the Medical Center in June of 2009. Englewood Hospital was one of five competing bids.

“Since the inception of our partnership with Englewood Hospital last year, the emergency response services to our residents have been vastly enhanced, and our municipal expenses have been greatly reduced,” said David Lorenzo, Palisades Park Borough Administrator. “In these tough economic times, where every dollar counts, Englewood Hospital has really stepped up to the plate and has enabled the borough to further maintain tax levels.”

Englewood Hospital also provides supplemental ambulance services to Cliffside Park, Cresskill, Edgewater, Englewood, Fairview, Fort Lee, and Tenafly.  Supplemental ambulance services help local towns add emergency coverage as volunteers continue to decline.

“We are honored to have been given the opportunity to bring quality pre-hospital care into the home of every resident in the Borough of Leonia.” said Harvey Weber, Director of Englewood Hospital’s Emergency Medical Services Department. “We are committed to providing compassionate care in a humanistic environment by extending these qualities beyond the front doors of the hospital.”

About Englewood Hospital Ambulance Services

Englewood Hospital operates the second largest hospital-based ambulance system in Bergen County.  The Medical Center’s fleet of ambulances, which features extensive equipment essential to providing care for patients in life-threatening or emergency situations, doubled in 2008, and plans are underway to add an additional vehicle to meet the increasing demand for pre-hospital emergency medical care.

In addition to providing mutual aid service to Bergen County, Englewood Hospital has partnered with the City of Englewood to provide back-up ambulance coverage, EMT and CPR training, medical oversight and back-up ambulance coverage.

Englewood Hospital’s EMS teams remain active in community service programs throughout Bergen County.  Among its many activities are special coverage at health fairs and events and educational support for the County’s diverse communities.
