Ten Minutes That Can Save Your Life - Free Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Screening at Englewood Hospital

Englewood, NJ, March 29, 2012 In recognition of Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center will host a free oral, head and neck cancer screening on Monday, April 9, from 5:30-8:30pm, in the Outpatient Clinic at the Medical Center located at 350 Engle Street, Englewood, NJ. The screening is designed to improve early diagnosis, which can lead to better outcomes. It includes a 5- to 10-minute exam of the mouth, tongue and the lymph nodes in the neck. The exam is painless and could be life-saving.

Cancers of the head and neck include the oral and nasal cavity, lips, mouth, thyroid glands, salivary glands, throat and larynx (voice box). Oral, head and neck cancers claim approximately 12,000 lives per year. By the time they are diagnosed, for some, it’s too late. However, when diagnosed early, these cancers can be more easily treated without significant complications, and the chances of survival greatly increase.

Tobacco and alcohol users traditionally have been considered the populations at greatest risk for these cancers. However, oral cancer cases are on the rise in younger adults who do not smoke, and recent research indicates this development is due partly to the increase of the human papillomavirus (HPV) virus, a cancer-causing infection that can be transmitted by oral sex. HPV-related oral cancers are more difficult to detect because these cancers usually occur on the back of the tongue or on the tonsils, providing even more reason to get screened regularly.

Signs and symptoms include:

• A sore in your mouth that doesn't heal or that increases in size

• Persistent pain in your mouth

• Lumps or white or red patches inside your mouth

• Difficulty chewing or swallowing or moving your tongue

• Soreness in your throat or feeling that something is caught in your throat

• Changes in your voice

• A lump in your neck

If you have any of the above warning signs, do not wait for the free screening. Seek medical attention immediately.

The oral, head and neck cancer screening at Englewood Hospital is free but pre-registration is required. To register, call 1-866-980 EHMC (3462) or visit EnglewoodHospital.com. Free parking is available.
