HealthGrades® Names Englewood Hospital and Medical Center Among Best in Nation in Maternity Care

- Report Finds Top Hospitals Have 62% Fewer Maternal Complications –

(Englewood, NJ, June 19, 2012) – Englewood Hospital and Medical Center is among the nation’s top-performing hospitals in maternity care, according to a new report released by HealthGrades®, a leading independent health care ratings organization.

HealthGrades® recognized Englewood Hospital with the Maternity Care Excellence Award™ and the 5-Star Rating for Maternity Care. These two distinctions have once again placed the Medical Center among the top 10-percent of hospitals nationwide for excellent clinical performance in maternity care.

Additionally, Englewood Hospital is one of only three hospitals in New Jersey to receive both honors for eight consecutive years.

“We’re very proud of this extraordinary national recognition,” said Faith Frieden, MD, Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Englewood Hospital. “It is reflective of our team’s dedication and efforts to provide mothers and newborns with the best quality care and a safe birthing experience.”

These top distinctions are based on clinical outcomes in four categories involving maternity care, including complication rates and infant mortality rates. HealthGrades® makes its performance evaluations using three years of publicly-reported hospital data. The best‐performing hospitals received 5 stars, average‐performing hospitals received 3 stars, and poor‐performing hospitals received one star.

Patients at 5-Star hospitals had 62- percent fewer complications during childbirth compared to hospitals rated as poor. Furthermore, HealthGrades® reports nearly 160,000 women would not have had complications if all hospitals performed at the level of highly rated hospitals in maternity care.

“As women become more likely to seek medical attention based on public reporting outcomes, this level of detail in reduction of complications will be most important,” said Divya Cantor, MD, MBA, HealthGrades senior physician consultant and the study’s author. “Which hospital an expectant mom chooses to a have her baby can result in life-long consequences for both her and her baby, physicians and all care givers are able to use this data as impetus for improving their quality outcomes.”
