New Virtual Tour Helps Children to Prepare for Surgery

-Englewood Hospital and Medical Center Now Offers Online Preparation Tool to Families-

(Englewood, NJ, February 12, 2013) – Parents of children facing surgery now have access to a new online tool designed to help alleviate their child’s stress and anxiety in the days leading up to a surgical procedure. The Child Life Specialists of Englewood Hospital and Medical Center recently developed and launched a Pediatric Pre-Surgical Virtual Tour in an effort to make the medical experience less overwhelming for the hospital’s youngest patients.

The Medical Center’s online tour provides a visual and narrative presentation that aims to help children understand what will happen when they visit the hospital. It is offered as an alternative to families who are unable to attend in-person, pre-surgical tours. Realistic photos and explanations in age-appropriate language allow children to familiarize themselves with the hospital environment and learn about the sequence of events on the day of surgery.

“We designed the Virtual Tour to give children and families a better understanding of what to expect from the moment they enter the hospital to the moment they are discharged,” explained Michelle Brauntuch, MS CCLS, Certified Child Life Specialist at Englewood Hospital. “We know the unfamiliar surroundings and equipment may initially cause feelings of fear and anxiety. The goal of this new tool is to prepare them for what they will see and feel and clarify any misconceptions children may have about the upcoming experience.”

The Virtual Tour will also help families plan effective coping strategies for a child’s hospital stay, whether it is a few hours or several days.

“We hope this will ease the concerns of worried parents, who naturally want make the experience more manageable for their child,” explained Brauntuch. “Our priority is to prepare patients and families and provide support throughout the entire process.”
