IBD Center
The Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Center at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center offers patients a one-stop resource for the diagnosis, treatment and management of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s Disease.

Under the leadership of Kenneth Rubin, MD, Director of the IBD Center, Barry Zingler, MD, EHMC Section Chief of Gastroenterology, and Michael T. Harris, MD, EHMC Chief of Surgery and Surgical Services, the Center will work in cooperation with The Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America.

The Center takes a multidisciplinary approach to addressing the personal and individual needs of the IBD patient. The IBD medical team, including adult and pediatric gastroenterologists, and gastrointestinal surgeons, will work closely with physicians from other disciplines, including OB/GYN, Pathology and Radiology, to provide comprehensive care. The emotional and nutritional needs of the IBD patient will also be addressed, providing consultations on stress and pain management, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), relaxation training and nutritional aids and guidance when warranted.

The IBD Center’s medical team is on the forefront of medical advances in the diagnosis, treatment and management of IBD and the Center’s commitment to excellence will be anchored by an academic approach. The Center’s team of IBD experts contributes to medical literature on IBD and to the development of pathology, infusion and other clinical protocols, with the aim of achieving the most effective IBD treatments.

Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis Care
The IBD Center has expanded its services to include several innovative surgeries to treat patients with Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis. Englewood Hospital is the only hospital in Northern New Jersey to offer the full range of procedures to treat these conditions in pediatric and adult patients.

The “J-Pouch” surgery is a complex reconstructive surgery mainly used to treat patients with
ulcerative colitis. While this procedure is typically done in two to three steps, with most surgeons leaving the patient with a temporary ileostomy or “bag,” EHMC is among only a handful of hospitals worldwide capable of performing the surgery in a single session, often using a laparoscopic technique. The resulting “J-shaped” pouch not only allows the patient to produce a natural bowel movement, but ultimately helps to restore a patient’s quality of life.

The IBD Center also offers laparoscopic procedures to treat patients with Crohn’s Disease.
Gastrointestinal surgeons remove diseased bowel and reattach the healthy ends of the
intestine using a minimally invasive technique, which often leads to a better outcome and
faster recovery for the patient.

IBD Care for Teens and Young Adults
EHMC’s complete package of cutting-edge IBD services include designated “swing rooms”
for adolescent and young adult patients hospitalized with IBD. These unique “swing rooms”
allow adult and pediatric nursing staff to collaborate on the follow-up care for young patients with Crohn’s Disease or ulcerative colitis.
