Private Duty Nurse

It is a right of all patients or their families to contract with a private professional (“private duty”) nurse during their own or a family member’s hospitalization. In doing so, the hired nurse must comply with Department of Health Regulations, which require: “...private duty nurses to adhere to policies and procedures in regard to treatment protocols, and to adhere to other hospital policies and procedures so long as they are the same for private duty and regularly employed nurses.”

Any deviation from these regulations is a violation of New Jersey State code. If you have any questions or concerns regarding how this may apply to your situation, please contact the patient care director or nurse administrative supervisor of your unit.
